Kora river gorge

Kora river gorge – is one of the most beautiful mountain gorges of Semirechiye region. The river is born high up in the mountains in the kingdom of secular glaciers. Like a shy garrulous tiny brook it swoops down where its strengths are fed by hundreds of springs and sources. It is only during the winter and spring time when its waters stay tranquil and clear, however, with warming coming in all the snow covering the slopes starts to melt and the river is waking up from the winter sleepiness. The river becomes stormy, impetuous and inexorable - nipped in between the rocks it carries its grey foamy waters through the rifts turning huge boulders and ancient trees stems without any difficulty just as they were little matchsticks. The river takes its head at the height of 3,000 m above the sea level between the rocks and glaciers. Being fed by the energy of numerous springs and sources on its way of over 100 km extension, it swoops down into the valley by powerful stream and flows into the Karatal river.
Burkhan-Bulak Waterfall
The waterfall of Burkhan-Bulack is the largest waterfall in the Central Asia region and is located in the gorge of Kora river at the height of 2000 m above the sea level. The height of its three tiers extends up to 112m. The tonnes of ice-cold water crash down in noisy stream sprinkling everything around with millions of splashes. In clear streams against the background of reddish rocks covered in emerald moss, the sun is playing with its rays. Dozens of multicolored rainbows amplify the attractive picture painted by the world greatest artist – Ms. Nature. In winter time the waterfall is “dressed” into the snowy-and-icy coat and above its cup there is an icy bridge made up. The maximum water flow is observed in the month of July and this is when the waterfall shows its real character. The water is crashing down in enormous stream covering waterfall’s ledges and stages. Undoubtedly, the waterfall of Burkhan-Bulack is an attractive, breathtaking and bewitching sight.
«Saint Stone» Natural Boundary
Every place on earth is given its name by people. Names comprise of worldly wisdom and often talk for themselves. There is a natural boundary in Kora river valley that is called a «Saint Stone». An enormous boulder lays there not far from the road, and every pedestrian traveller or horse-rider would definitely stop at it and sit down before continuing his way. Every traveller tends to leave at the foot of the belle fir tree some tiny little thing, normally a tiny scrap of his cloth, having made a wish at that. It is believed that this wish shall definitely come true. There is a beautiful legend behind this. This legend is directly connected with this place.  Once upon a time, in avital times, when our grand fathers’ fathers were children, when vastitudes were full of various birds and animals, there was a small village in the valley near the river. The cattle was browsing the blessed pastures. Days would go by and nothing would really trouble people. However, one fine day a disaster earthquake happened there and destroyed unclouded happiness of people. The river spilled over its banks, the rocks started to collapse just like they were not stony hard and the earth was groaning with pain. Fear and panic seized over people. A huge stony block fell and started to rush down the steep slope of the hill destroying ancient fir-trees on its way. It seemed that nothing could really stop this rolling boulder, but miracle happened!
At this very time, in one of the yurts (nomad’s house), a young woman was giving a birth to a little child. First screams of a chid were heard and the stony boulder had stopped just like it was embedded there in a few centimetres from their yurt!
Since then, people have been calling this boulder the «Saint Stone». A believer would stop here and pray, an atheist would stop here and do some thinking of life!
